Moberly teenager is third fatally of auto accidents that have taken place recently

A 16-year-old student at Moberly High School, Michael Schmidt, died Tuesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a car-train accident.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. on county road 2350, two miles east of Moberly in Randolph County.

Schmidt, driving a southbound 1991 Subaru Loyale, had stopped at the Norfolk and Southern Railroad tracks and then proceeded into the path of the eastbound train. The train struck the Schmidt vehicle in the passenger side.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by Randolph County Coroner David Haley.

The train, a 1995 General Electric locomotive, was driven from the scene by engineer Kevin Mason, 34, of Decatur, Ill.

Funeral for young Schmidt, the oldest child of Mike and Suzanne Boswell Schmidt, will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church of Moberly. Visitation is Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at Cater Funeral Home.

Michael Herbert (Mikey) Schmidt Jr., 16, of Moberly, died Tuesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a car-train accident. He was born Oct. 26, 1986, at Columbia, a son of Michael and Suzanne Boswell Schmidt.

Memorials to St. Pius X Building Foundation or a scholarship fund in memory of Mikey at Moberly High School are suggested.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Father Mike Coleman will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Caters with a 7:30 p.m. wake service.

Moberly Soccer

Moberly cancelled tonight's girls soccer game at Columbia Hickman due to the death of 16-year old Michael Schmidt who was killed Tuesday when the vehicle he was driving was struck by a train.

Schmidt was a member of the Spartans boys soccer team and played baseball.

Visition for Schmidt will be from 4-8 p.m. this evening at Cater Funeral Home. Funeral service is Friday, 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Church of Moberly.

He was the son of Mike and Suzanne Schmidt.

The Moberly athletic office reported that the Lady Spartans will play Warrensburg at home on Friday evening.

That's all that's been said of Mikey's death. I really don't know what to say of it. He was taken from us on April 1st. It's scary. He's soooo close to my age. He was only 16. I'm 18. He'll never know what it's like to go to prom, graduate, get married, have kids...anything. It brings us smashing into reality. Life IS short.
